About the GIF Maker

Turns images, a video clip or a screen recording into an animated GIF, entirely on your machine. Load or record something, set the options below in any order, and watch the live preview: it plays exactly what will be encoded. Press Make GIF when it looks right and download the result.

Every Setting

Record Screen
The browser asks which screen, window or tab to share, records until you press Stop Recording (or the browser’s own sharing bar), then drops the frames straight into the editor. Desktop browsers only; on a phone, use the built-in screen recorder and upload the video.
Capture
How many frames a second get pulled out of a video or recording. More frames means smoother motion and a bigger file. Set it before you record: changing it later means resampling the video, which also resets Keep and removed frames.
Video Range
The filmstrip of the whole video or recording. A GIF keeps at most 15 seconds, so drag the gold window to the segment you want; the edges trim it, the middle slides it. Nothing re-slices while you adjust: press Apply Range (or just Make GIF) and the frames extract once from that stretch.
Speed
How fast the finished GIF plays back. It only changes the pause between frames, never which frames exist. Against the capture rate it sets the tempo: capture at 10 and play at 30 and the GIF runs at three times real speed. The readout beside the slider does that math for you.
Width
The output width in pixels; height follows the shape automatically. It applies to the cropped region, and the readout beside it shows the exact output size. Past 960 px the files get heavy fast.
Keep
Trims the animation to frames x through y, the quick way to cut dead time at both ends of a recording. Clicking a frame in the strip below removes just that one.
Loop
Forever repeats endlessly. Once plays a single time and stops on the last frame. Ping-Pong plays forward then backward, so the loop never jump-cuts.
Dithering
A GIF can only use 256 colors per frame, so smooth gradients can come out as visible bands of flat color. Floyd-Steinberg hides the bands by scattering tiny dots of the nearest colors, the way newspaper photos fake gray: smoother shading, slightly grainy texture, somewhat bigger file. None keeps flat areas perfectly clean, which suits screen recordings and UI.
Captions
Text drawn into the frames themselves. Each caption has Text, Style and Timing tabs: its own font, color and size, dragged into place on the preview, and a timing bar whose gold window sets the frames it shows on, so text can appear and disappear mid-loop.
Crop
The preview always plays exactly what will export. Edit Crop switches to the full frame with a gold window; drag its edges, press Done, and the preview snaps back to the cropped result.
Make GIF
Encodes in the background with real progress and a working cancel, then shows the finished GIF with its true file size and a download link.

Common Questions

Video or images in?
Either, plus screen recording straight from the browser on desktop. Drop images in order, or a video and choose how many frames a second to keep.
Why is my GIF huge?
Dimensions and frame count dominate. The size readout next to Width shows the output before you encode; under 960 px wide is the safe zone.
Can I record just a region of the screen?
No browser allows that: the share picker only offers a screen, a window or a tab, and a web page cannot draw a selection box over your desktop. Record the window, then drag the gold crop window over the part you want; the GIF keeps only that.
